The build

Built for the people software usually forgets: plumbers, photographers, tutors, village shops. Full invoice lifecycle — estimates, tax presets, payment states, recurring billing — with zero network dependency, because the places that need invoicing most often have the worst connectivity.

What we handled

  • Six professionally typeset PDF templates with logo & signature
  • Payment state machine: Draft → Sent → Viewed → Paid / Overdue
  • Recurring billing; estimates convert to invoices in one tap
  • Reports export as CSV/PDF; private Drive backup, no account

The third Chimbuk product on Google Play: professional invoicing for the people software usually forgets — plumbers, photographers, tutors, village shops — designed to work at full quality with no internet, no account and no monthly fee. Below: the document engine, the payment state machine, the typeset PDF line, and the launch-week honesty about what a brand-new listing can and cannot claim.

Built for the worst connectivity, not the best

Invoicing apps are designed around offices; the businesses that need them most are standing in a workshop with two bars of signal. So the product rule was inverted: the network is the optional feature, never the dependency. Creation, numbering, tax math, PDF rendering and reports all run on-device — a shop can bill through a fibre cut, a blackout or a dead SIM without noticing.

That constraint shapes everything downstream: local storage is primary truth, sync is a background courtesy (backup to your own Drive folder when convenient), and the app's Play declaration — nothing collected, nothing shared — is again an architecture fact, not a policy choice. “We never see your business data” is a sentence a client's auditor can test.

Six templates that look designed, not generated

The PDF line is a typesetting engine, not a form fill: six layouts (Classic, Modern, Minimal, Bold, Creative, Professional) drawn through Flutter's canvas with the same tokens as the UI — logo placement, signature capture, line-item grouping, page numbering and currency alignment are laid out per template and tested against golden files. An invoice from Invoice Maker looks like a document a client received, not a receipt a machine emitted.

Because the renderer is code, customising “your” template for a paying business is a theme, not a rework — the same engine already produces the estimate and report document types, which is how one product covers quote, invoice and statement without three codebases.

A payment state machine, not a tick-box

Every invoice walks Draft → Sent → Viewed → Paid, with Partially Paid and Overdue as first-class states — the record of getting paid is the actual product, because chasing politely and on time is what small businesses lose money to. Payments are recorded by method (cash, bank transfer, card, cheque, UPI, COD) against the invoice, so balances stay true; recurring billing runs on the same ledger, generating weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly documents deterministically.

Estimates complete the loop: quote a job, track acceptance or decline, and convert an approved estimate into a numbered invoice in one tap — the transition preserves the line items and snapshots the terms, so the document a client agreed to is the document that gets billed.

Tax, discount and currency as data

Custom tax rates with saved presets, percentage or fixed discounts, and 140+ currencies handled as first-class metadata mean the math adapts to a Dhaka shop and a Dubai freelancer with zero code change. Totals are computed from the same integer minor-unit engine as the ledger, so the PDF, the dashboard chart and the CSV export can never disagree — the reconciliation bugs that plague spreadsheet invoicing were designed out at the schema.

The dashboard reads that engine: revenue charts, paid/unpaid breakdowns, top clients and upcoming dues, all exportable as CSV or PDF for an accountant. No cloud BI, no seat licenses — a phone's worth of computation that fits a shop's reality.

The newest addition: scan toward an invoice

The current build's update note is blunt — “scanner feature”. The direction it marks: point the camera at a handwritten bill or an old invoice and have the line items pre-filled, editable before anything is saved. We ship auto-fill, never auto-send: the state machine above only advances through actions a human confirmed, because a billing tool earns trust by being wrong safely.

Free core, unlocks that don't hold the ledger hostage

The listing says free with in-app purchases, and the line we hold: the money-critical mechanics — unlimited invoices, states, taxes, exports — are the free core forever; unlocks buy conveniences and template depth. A business must never be locked out of its own records mid-month, which is also why backup files are plain, restorable and yours.

Launched weeks ago with a 0+ download counter, this page promises no viral numbers. What it does prove is visible in ten minutes of installing it: a document engine, a correct ledger and a release pipeline — the same three things your product would get.

Under the hood — what each box took to build

Craft, per feature

  • Invoice composer

Line items, quantities, rates, discount modes and tax presets in one scrolling form — one-tap billing from a saved client and catalog.

  • Template studio

Six PDF layouts drawn on Flutter's canvas with logo, signature and per-template typography rules; a client-branded template is a theme, not a fork.

  • Payment state machine

Draft → Sent → Viewed → Paid with partial/overdue branches; reminders and recurring documents generated from the same deterministic rule set.

  • Estimates → invoices

Accept/decline tracking on quotes; conversion snapshots terms into the invoice, so what the client agreed to is what gets billed.

  • Reports & exports

Revenue, paid/unpaid and tax summaries as CSV or PDF — golden-file tested per release so an accountant's spreadsheet never breaks on update day.

  • Private Drive backup

Encrypted export into the user's own Drive folder: device migration and safekeeping without our servers ever seeing a row.

Commissioning this shape of product

The plan, as we would propose it

  1. 01 · Document model1–2 weeks

Numbering, tax/currency math in minor units, state machine spec, the fields that must never change across versions.

  2. 02 · Typeset & render2–3 weeks

PDF template engine, logo/signature pipeline, golden-file visual tests for every layout.

  3. 03 · Lifecycle & billing2–3 weeks

Estimates, recurring generator, payment recording, dashboard aggregations from the same source.

  4. 04 · Offline trust & release1–2 weeks

Backup/restore drills, Drive sync review, data-safety declarations, staged Play rollout.

What a client actually wins

  • Markets others exclude

Full-quality offline billing reaches shops where competitors' apps are bricks without signal — capability as distribution.

  • One engine, every document

The typesetting core already emits invoices, estimates and reports; contracts, receipts and statements for a client are new templates, not new apps.

  • Zero-server operations

Local ledger plus user-owned backup means no infrastructure bill and no incident page between a shop and its records.

  • Get-paid workflows, not PDFs

The state machine turns “sent a PDF” into “tracked to payment” — the metric that matters to the businesses this is for.

What is not true (yet)

  • Launched weeks ago: the 0+ install counter is on the listing and on this page — no growth claims until the data exists.
  • The scanner is a shipped first step, described by its update note; expect “scan to editable draft”, not “scan to done”.
  • In-app purchase unlocks are young; template depth and convenience tiers will move while the core stays free.
  • Android-only until the iOS store process is scheduled; the codebase is one flip away, the process is not.

Testimonial slot — reserved, not invented

The listing has no review wall to quote yet — so there is no quote here. Real, credited words move into this card as players leave them.

Sponsored placement — reserved, disclosure first

Placements & partners

This is where a genuinely used tool or partner link would live — hosting, device labs, our travel products. It ships empty and labelled on purpose: when a sponsored link arrives, it arrives wearing this disclosure, never dressed up as editorial.

Answers where they belong

Questions this project answers

Want Invoice Maker-class engineering for your idea?

One brief in, the composer arrives with your platforms pre-ticked — Android, iOS, web, admin.

Do I need an account or the internet?

Neither. Invoices, estimates, taxes and reports run fully offline; Drive sync and backup are optional conveniences that use your own Google account, not ours.

Is it really free?

The money-critical core — unlimited invoices, states, exports — is free. In-app purchases add conveniences and template depth; your ledger is never paywalled.

Can I put my logo and signature on it?

Yes — across all six PDF templates; logo, digital signature and business details are part of the profile the documents render from.

How do recurring invoices work?

Weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly schedules generate documents deterministically from the ledger rules, so a missed app-open never skips a billing run or double-bills.

Will my accountant be able to use my data?

That is a first-class use case: CSV and PDF reports round-trip into Excel/Sheets and stay stable across releases via golden-file tests.

Can Chimbuk build billing or document tools for my business?

This app is the proof of the engine. Scoped as an MVP it is typically 6–10 weeks from Discovery — start the brief and the number arrives in writing.
